• Chewy Granola Bars

We love granola bars, they're fast, they're simple, easy to carry, easy to pack, make great snacks- but I HATE the price. Have you noticed how the major brand name granola bars have gone from a 2 inches wide to about 3/4 of an inch wide?? Ditch the box and try these, you won't go back!
Before you start the recipe, it's important to note that you
cannot substitute the ingredients and have them come out chewy.

For example, Don't substitute rolled oats for the quick oats because the granola bars will fall apart!

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine everything in a bowl, mixing until well combined.

    Press
mixture evenly in un-greased 13x9 casserole pan.

Bake 15-17 minutes.; Cut into bars while still warm. These freeze well & make excellent afterschool snacks.

    Variations:

    To the above recipe Add:

    • 1/3 c. chopped dried apples and 1 tsp cinnamon (or)
    • 1/3 c. powered milk for a breakfast bar (or)
    • 1/3 c. raisins or craisins or dried cherries (or)
    • 1/3 c. chopped walnuts or almonds
    • 1/3 c. Any Flavor Baking Chips- Mint, Butterscotch, Peanut Butter, Etc

We'd love to hear your variation
    ideas as well!

Found your recipe and hour ago......I think I've eaten the whole pan almost. I used chocolate chips and buterscotch chips.

haha, they're addictive aren't they! I had Nestle mint chips that I got on sale for .50 a bag, the kids devoured them. I've added chopped dried cherries and chocolate together too, SUPER yummy.

I have made these twice and both time they fell apart on me. What am I doing wrong? Why won't they hold there shape for me?

      Hmm... let's see if we can troubleshoot this . . . .

Could be any number of reasons, for example the brand of butter (moisture content changes drastically between brands), Your altitude, slightly overcooking them (oven temperatures vary), the brand of quick mix you're using- what brand is it? are you making your own, if so, what's the recipe you're using- it may be slightly more dry.

If she used rolled oats instead of quick oats, they don't work out as well. You have to bake a lot longer and they do fall apart...still tasty though!

I made them and they were flimsy and didn't hold their shape well. I made another batch and cooked them a lot longer...made the recipe exactly. With the correct ingredients, still yummy, but kind of a gooey mess.
