2012 $50 Weekly Menu Plan Week #45: This week the farmers market had great deals on fresh green beans, only .50 a pound, pomegranates for .99 each, potatoes -10# for $2 and tons of other great deals.
We went to till our garden under for winter and were surprised to discover that our garden was producing eggplant, jalapenos and green peppers!

We picked up lettuce, celery, pomegranates, potatoes, green beans, spinach, grapes, pears, baking chips (on sale)- which include chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, vanilla chips, peanut butter chips and mint chips, molasses, brown sugar, pumpkin (for only .99 each!), half and half, yogurt, milk & bread. Total spent $36.54

Monday 5th:

  • Breakfast: Scrambled eggs & Toast
  • Lunch: PB & J
  • Dinner: Tomato Basil Garlic Marinated Grilled Chicken, Steamed Green Beans, Grilled Taters & Onions

Tuesday 6th:

Wednesday 7th

Thursday 8th

  • Breakfast:Yogurt w/ Frozen Berries
  • Lunch: Grilled Cheese
  • Dinner:Creamy Butternut Spinach Gnocchi

Friday 9th

Saturday 10th:

Sunday 11th:

  • Breakfast:Copycat Cinnabon Rolls
  • Midday Meal:Leftover Day- tons of salad stuff, sandwich meat, Chili and items from yesterdays get together

Various Snacks:

Drinks included: * Iced Tea (Sweet Tea)
* Coffee
* Lemonade
* Copycat Gatorade
* CopyCat Arizona Green Tea

A few things I’d like to share: You might have noticed that eggs aren’t appearing on the menu much this week, for some reason our chickens have decided not to lay lately. We’re only getting a handful of eggs per day.

  1. How do you get such good deals at the farmer’s market? Our market is just as expensive as the grocery store, sometimes more. In the fall and winter, they seem to have more breads, kettle corn, soaps and canned goods. Any suggestions?

      It depends on the market- we have one here that is outrageous (You’d think it was sponsored by whole foods!).

      Generally speaking we look for vendors that specialize in just one or 2 items, rather than a variety. If you have a vendor selling 30 things, versus 1- your less likely to get a deal.

      For example, a few weeks ago cantaloupes at the market were $2.50 ea with 1 particular vendor who had just about every fresh produce item you could imagine, but at the end of the line of tables, another vendor had an entire truckload of Just Cantaloupes. I offered him $3 for 2 and he accepted and gave me another that was Over-ripe and needed to be eaten immediately. It helps to make friends with the vendors, sometimes we’ll swap a jar of jam or pickles in return for good deals. We purchased bushels of tomatoes for as little as $6.

      The key is buy IN PEAK Season. If you aren’t sure what is in season at it’s peak, check out the Seasonal Sales Trends pages– they’re loaded with money saving info.
