• 2013 $50 Weekly Menu Plan Week #38

2013 $50 Weekly Menu Plan Week #38: Autumn is the perfect time of year for us, cooler weather means hearty crockpot dishes for dinner, apple picking, pumpkin picking and so much more. This weeks menu plan focuses on the flavors of fall and includes some time honored favorites like apple cider donuts, copycat starbucks pumpkin lattes and more for a grand total of $54.60 this week

From the Store & Farmers Market: Half & Half, Heavy Cream, Apple Cider, Artisan Lettuce, celery, cucumbers, green peppers, fresh green beans, Freshly Picked apples right from the orchard- Cortlands and MacIntosh. Here's a tip for those of you that like to pick your own, ask the orchard if they allow you to pick "drops" these are apples that are still perfect for baking & cooking but have dropped from the trees due to overzealous pickers, wind, etc. The drops cost as little as half the price and most orchards are thrilled to have you offer. Be sure you are actually picking up the drops and check them thoroughly to avoid wormy apples.

Leftover from Last week that we still need to use: spinach, cantaloupe, nectarines, plums, yogurt

From the Garden: tomatoes, jalapenos, okra, carrots
    From our Backyard: Fresh Eggs

Breakfast Options for this week: The breakfast options are becoming snack options as well, because this time of year the kids often grab things like muffins, scones, fruit salad, and the various flavors of refrigerator oatmeal for quick snacks at any hour of the day. Our youngest is going through a "smoothie" phase and he's suddenly scarfing fruit up like there's no tomorrow. I have a feeling it's more due to the coaches pushing heavier weights in preparation for the upcoming tournaments, but in any case, we're seeing the dent in the grocery budget as a direct result.

FYI: If you're just joining us you've probably noticed that eggs were not listed in this weeks "purchased Items list". This is because we raise our own hens for fresh eggs. We often go through 3-8 dozen eggs per week with the boys weightlifting and our hens produce 2-3 dozen per day on average. The remaining eggs we give away, sell or trade for other items.
